Understanding Domestic Adoptions
![]() |
When you first start considering adoption, you will discover there are two distinct types -- first the domestic adoption and the other is international adoption. Here, we will explore domestic child adoptions. What domestic adoption means is that the child is adopted within the United States. There has been a lot of attention being paid to international adoption in the media lately and some people have ignored domestic adoption. It may be the best option for you if you are looking to bring a child into your home so you should consider the possibility. There certainly are some clear advantages to adopting in the United States and the lower cost is just one such advantage.
The obvious first area where you will save money is on travel as traveling across the United States is going to cost you significantly less than traveling overseas. You will not have to deal with the international complications like passports and vaccinations. If you choose to adopt in your home state, your costs will be even less. Not to say that adopting a child is free as that is of course not the case. You can expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000 in adoption fees depending on which agency you decide to use.
Another big advantage to adopting in the United States is that the adoptive parents are more likely to be able to get a newborn child. However, the adoption requirements are often more strict. and you may be required to attend educational classes which are designed to prepare adopting parents before they are allowed to proceed with the adoption. With this type of adoption, you often also have to be approved by the birth mother and the birth mother, even if she selects you, can change her mind at any time. This can be totally devastating for potential adoptive parents who had their hearts set on adopting a child. When compared with international adoption, domestic birth mothers have a much greater involvement in the adoption process.
Regardless of whether you go for domestic adoption or you decide on international adoption, you will need the services of a knowledgeable adoption attorney to help you. You will also need to choose a legitimate and reputable agency to work with. You should research as much as you can on the subject of adoption so you have a good idea of what is involved in what can be a long and stressful process. Like any adoptive parent will tell you, the process may be long, expensive and difficult to go through but is worth it all and when you bring your new son of daughter home you will know it was all worthwhile.
